Is it wrong that I just bought these very feminine summer pieces to go with the very gamine haircut I'm getting this afternoon? I think not.

just a perfect day.

This past Wednesday, Nina from the oh-so-sweet blog Naturally Nina posed a very simple yet thought-provoking question: What is your perfect day? I know this was supposed to be done two days ago, but I've been thinking about it in depth and wanted to dream up my perfect day. So here goes!

  • Wake up to the pull of Ryan's arm around me while he nuzzles the back of my neck and slivers of that soft morning sunshine as it hits my face.
  • Slip out of bed and take Rocco out for a quick walk.
  • Ride the 5-miles back to our apartment with a light breeze blowing.
  • Shower and clean up. Get comfortable in pair of favorite jeans and a t-shirt. Play with Rocco while listening to Handsome Furs.
  • Head to a bookstore to catch up on trashy celebrity gossip, modern architecture, and healthy recipes. Pick up a newspaper.
  • Go home for a lazy afternoon of doing the crossword puzzle together while listening to the Dirty Three on our record player, napping, playing with Rocco (again!) and having a glass of dolcetto.
  • Meet with close friends for a meal with lots of laughter and wine.

These images are so weird they're cool. They give me a weird feeling in my stomach--sort of the same feeling that Donnie Darko gave me when I first watched it. Not that Donnie Darko and these photos are the same thing--maybe it's just the bunny costume. In any case, I love this series. I have no idea who shot them but I found them on this page.

a house named tofu.

After a three-day weekend full of the 3-F trifecta (food, family, and fun), it was just a tad bit difficult getting myself out of bed this morning. But, I plowed through and with the help of a cup of coffee and some breakfast, I am alert and ready to face the day (let's hope this lasts). This morning, while searching the blogosphere, I happened upon something quite lovely. By way of the wonderful blog Ii-ne-kore, I found a wonderful Japanese architecture blog called What We Do Is Secret. A House Named Tofu, completed in 1997 in Kyoto was originally intended for a couple who wanted it to be their retirement home. Unlike most homes finished in the late 1990s, this home looks anything but dated and is a testament to how simple clean lines can give a home a timeless appearance.

comfort food.

Tonight, on the 6th straight day of rain, I will attempt to make a chicken pot pie at home to satisfy the craving I've had all week. Using following recipe below from Epicurious.com, I will have my pie and eat it, too!

Family-Size Chicken Pot Pie

ingredients
1 TBSP EACH OLIVE OIL AND BUTTER

1 LG ONION, CHOPPED
2 TSP FINELY MINCED GARLIC
2 TBSP ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
2 TSP DRIED TARRAGON
3 CARROTS, HALVED AND CUT INTO 1-IN PIECES (1 1/2 C)
1 C PEELED AND DICED (1/2-IN) RUSSET POTATOES
1 GRANNY SMITH APPLE, CORED AND CUT INTO 1/2-IN PIECES
2 1/2 C CHICKEN BROTH
1/2 C FRESH OR FROZEN PEAS
1/4 C CHOPPED FRESH DILL
1 MD-SIZED RIPE TOMATO, SEEDED AND CUT INTO 1/2-IN DICE
2 1/2 C DICED COOKED CHICKEN
SALT AND PEPPER, TO TASTE

1 SHEET PREPARED PUFF PASTRY (1/2 LB), THAWED IF FROZEN
1 EGG MIXED WITH 1 TBSP WATER

preparation
1. HEAT THE OIL AND BUTTER IN A POT OVER LOW HEAT. ADD THE ONION; COOK, STIRRING, FOR 10 MINUTES. ADD THE GARLIC; COOK 2 MINUTES MORE. SPRINKLE WITH THE FLOUR AND TARRAGON; COOK, STIRRING CONSTANTLY, FOR 1 TO 2 MINUTES MORE.

2. ADD THE CARROTS, POTATOES, APPLE, AND BROTH; BRING TO A BOIL. REDUCE HEAT TO A GENTLE SIMMER AND COOK, PARTIALLY COVERED, UNTIL THE VEGETABLES ARE TENDER, ABOUT 20 MINUTES. ADD THE PEAS, DILL, TOMATO, AND CHICKEN; SEASON TO TASTE WITH SALT AND PEPPER, THEN COOK 5 MINUTES MORE.

3. PREHEAT OVEN TO 350°F. SPOON THE MIXTURE INTO a 2-QT ROUND OVENPROOF CASSEROLE. ON A LIGHTLY FLOURED SURFACE, ROLL PUFF PASTRY OUT TO FORM A CIRCLE 2 IN LARGER THAN THE CASSEROLE. BRUSH SOME EGG WASH AROUND THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE RIM OF THE CASSEROLE. LAY THE PASTRY OVER THE TOP, TRIM THE OVERHANG TO 1 IN, AND CRIMP THE EDGES AROUND THE RIM TO SEAL. CUT SEVERAL SLITS IN THE PASTRY TO RELEASE THE STEAM, THEN BRUSH WITH REMAINING EGG WASH. BAKE UNTIL CRUST IS GOLDEN, 40 TO 45 MIN.

{Is it just me or does rainy weather just make you want to indulge in some comfort food?}

harvest.

Having a weakness for boys and their boards, I absolutely could not resist these bangles made of recycled skateboards. Made by entirely of skateboards that met their death through snapping in half, grinding, and general wear and tear, Japanese jewelry designers with a love of skating Harumaki and Hiroshi decided to make something of the boards that they held such sentimental value to. The end product was a line of jewelry and accessories labeled Harvest by Hiroshi.

Products can be purchased through the Harvest on-line shop, however, pricing is in yen and the site is in Japanese. Click here for more information.

pigeon toe ceramics.

These adorable handmade planters would be a welcome addition to the indoor garden we have in our living room. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Pigeon Toe Ceramics individually hand-crafts the holders and as an added bonus, some of them even include an airplant with them!

If you're new to airplants or if you're weary of your own green thumb, don't fret. Airplants are as easy as they get--leave in a brightly lit spot with filtered sunlight, soak in water once a week, no soil required. Voila!
