where would you go?

Good morning, my friends! I woke up this morning to the sound of airplanes passing overhead. And while, yes, it was an annoying way to start the day, it got me thinking of travel and all the places I'd still like to visit in my lifetime. I've done some pretty extensive traveling since I was a kid mostly visiting relatives in the Philippines and Japan, with a few sprinkles of family vacations to random places like Las Vegas (Hello, Circus Circus!) and educational excursions (Washington, D.C., anyone?). Because of this, I feel like I am filled with wanderlust and cannot stand the idea of being in one place for too long (unless, of course it's Portland and I settle there!) without feeling stir-crazy. It's been over two years since I've gotten on an airplane and I'm getting to the point where my bones are itching and I can't stop thinking of taking a mini-break somewhere fun. Any suggestions? I am currently in Florida and the weather's absolutely perfect right now. But. (And there's always a "but"...) I'd like a change of scenery. Somewhere I can walk or ride my bike a lot, enjoy some awesome mom-n-pop places to eat, and take in something cultural like a museum visit or a show or two. Where would you go? When was the last time you traveled somewhere far and wide or nearby and small? I'd love to know!

Well, it's hard to think of bikes and distant lands without thinking of Amsterdam. Plus, you've got the canals and plenty of wonderful museums. State-side--or just slightly north--how about Montreal? It's too cold any other time of year, but a mecca for all things cool.

go to Savannah,Georgia! It's not too far from Florida and absolutely gorgeous place!
    (p.s. I'm from Gainesville...yay Florida!)
  • Oh dear. it's been almost 2 years since I've been on an airplane, and the absence has heightened my fear (pun!), so much that I never want to get on one ever again.
Alas, I'm taking one in one week to LA. Hrm.
Anyway, I want to go to French Canada again. I went when I was little, didn't really appreciate it like I know I would now. Montreal, Quebec, speak some Francais (Quebecois?), and eat ungodly amounts of poutine!
  • I went to Circus Circus when I was little... and it was amazing!

Lately, I've been trying to plan a trip to Patagonia, but sometimes I stop myself and focus on more local travel - what is in my backyard and can offer a getaway? It's more manageable to get away for a weekend and travel 250 miles than a week and 2,500 miles, you know?

I just came back from celebrating my 30th birthday in Paris with friends, and it was more than amazing! But on my short list of dream places, I've got Italy, Tokyo, Greece, Namibia and Chile.
But first I'll be heading to Germany and Belgium this summer. Not quite as exotic, but who can say no to currywurst and mussels in Brussels?

+1 on holland. amersterdam can be great but don't forget there is a whole, enjoyable country there. off the top of my head, leiden, for example.

+100,000,000 on belgium. being partial to the flanders, i'd have to suggest (and almost demand) brugge. at the very least, gent.
